Chart of the Week: It’s the Right Time to be Looking for a Job

Chart of the WeekIf you have been waiting for a window to land a job—as if you were a double-dutch jumper trying to time the swing of the rope—this might finally be your opening! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of available jobs posted by employers in the United States reached a 14-year high in December 2014. Job openings rose nearly 4% at the end of last year, as more than 5 million jobs were available. This is the first time the labor market has hit the 5 million job-opening mark since January of 2001 (before the dot.com bubble burst).

Most Job Openings in 14 years

For the first time since the recession in 2009, people in the U.S. believe they are hearing good news about the job market (28%) versus bad news (22%) according to the Pew Research Center. This is a big change from last year when only 12% viewed job news as positive versus 42% that had negative perceptions. In addition, hiring has been accelerating at the fastest pace since 1997 and is strong in the construction and finance/insurance industries.
